Screening Party: Route to Emancipation (Documentary)

You're invited to the Austin premiere of Black History Bike Ride's short film "The Route to Emancipation". This documentary follows BHBR's leaders, Talib, Ariel, and Brandon, as they undertake a 350-mile cycling route from the Texas Capitol in Austin to the site in Galveston where Juneteenth began in 1865. Along the way, they explore centuries of Black history through interviews with historians and community leaders. After the screening there will be a Q&A with the filmmakers.

While traveling through the Amazon, Uýra shares ancestral knowledge with Indigenous youth to promote the significance of identity and place, threatened by Brazil's oppressive political regime. Through dance, poetry, and stunning characterization, Uýra boldly confronts historical racism, transphobia, and environmental destruction, while emphasizing the interdependence of humans and the environment.

Moving Together

ATX local dance company, BLiPSWiTCH, and filmmaker Maggie M. Bailey are proud to present a special sneak peek preview of Bailey’s feature-length directorial debut, Moving Together. This documentary is a celebratory love letter to music and dance that brims with kinetic life and energy. The film explores the process of dance and the intricate collaboration between dancers and musicians, moving seamlessly between Flamenco, Modern, and New Orleans Second Line. Featured artists include Jesse Zaritt, Michael Wall, Michelle N. Gibson, Thaddeus Ford, Isaí Chacón, and Olivia Chacón.

The screening will be preceded by a short dance performance from Isaí and Olivia Chacón's company A'lante Flamenco.
