New Manifest Theatre's Main Character Energy with Christine Hoang

As part of New Manifest Theatre's Manifest Minifest 5th annual short play festival, workshops about writing, directing, and producing are included in our week of programming.

In this writing workshop, participants will dive into the creation of story by exploring who their main character is - his flaws, her strengths, their wants, their obstacles. The workshop will then have participants create story beats so they can further develop their writing beyond the class. The characters discussed in class must be fictional for purposes of this workshop. They can have traits inspired by real people. But to challenge the imagination and deepen the writing, the main character must be fictional.

You're invited to the Austin premiere of Black History Bike Ride's short film "The Route to Emancipation". This documentary follows BHBR's leaders, Talib, Ariel, and Brandon, as they undertake a 350-mile cycling route from the Texas Capitol in Austin to the site in Galveston where Juneteenth began in 1865. Along the way, they explore centuries of Black history through interviews with historians and community leaders. After the screening there will be a Q&A with the filmmakers.

On August 25, Join the Texas Harm Reduction Alliance (THRA) for a fun and inspiring evening, with food, drinks, and dancing! Doors open at 5:30pm, followed by the program at 6pm.

The Texas Harm Reduction Alliance (THRA) is on the front lines of the drug war and overdose crisis, offering life-saving, non-judgmental harm reduction services, training and supplies for people who use drugs. In the last year, our participants kept someone alive 633 times with narcan they received at THRA.

While traveling through the Amazon, Uýra shares ancestral knowledge with Indigenous youth to promote the significance of identity and place, threatened by Brazil's oppressive political regime. Through dance, poetry, and stunning characterization, Uýra boldly confronts historical racism, transphobia, and environmental destruction, while emphasizing the interdependence of humans and the environment.
