What is KOOP?

KOOP (pronounced koh-op as in “co-op”) is a community radio station in Austin, TX, owned and operated by its members in a cooperative structure depending primarily upon its volunteers and supporters for all operations of the station. KOOP provides a diverse array of programming, emphasizing programs that deal with local issues and/or serve communities which are under-served by the mainstream media.

KOOP is Texas Educational Broadcasting Cooperative, dba KOOP Radio.

KOOP has more than 60 unique, locally-produced programs airing every week. Each of these programs is produced by an individual or by a collective of members. Any member of the community can join our organization and apply to produce a radio program — and KOOP provides the facilities and the training.

KOOP Mission

KOOP’s mission is to engage, connect and enrich the whole community, including the underserved, through creating diverse, quality, educational music and news programming.

Diversity

We know community radio plays a crucial role in the social justice movement for civil rights, women’s rights, and the rights of the LBGTQIA+ community. Our programs, studio, and our community events aim to be safe spaces for the oppressed in this country, as well as refugees fleeing from oppression abroad. Read our full Diversity Statement.

KOOP and KVRX

KOOP shares the 91.7 frequency with KVRX the University of Texas student radio station. KOOP broadcasts Monday through Friday from 9:00 am – 7:00 pm (CT), and weekends from 9:00 am – 10:00 pm. KOOP also has internet streaming only and HD Radio programming during the week after 7 p.m. When we’re not on the air, KVRX takes over. So, it’s KOOP during the day and KVRX at night.
