Film workshops for kids, then an exhibition where everything they made goes on screen. Every event is free, down to the film and the paintbrushes.

Kids paint directly on a strip of real 16mm film, with guided prompts from Faiza. Every strip becomes part of one living moving painting that premieres at the exhibition.

A 30-minute camera lesson, then an hour walking the Govalle Cultural District with Faiza and special guests, shooting real Super 8 film. Film what you notice. Every frame is shot by the kids.

Everything the kids made on weekend one goes up on screen in our Cinemaker Black Box Studio at The Canopy: the hand-painted 16mm moving painting and the unedited Super 8 films of the neighborhood, alongside work by Austin media artists. Both days at 1:00 PM the young creators take the mic for the Youth Media Arts Panel. Complimentary drinks, snacks, and a photobooth. Come see your kid's name on the wall.
Todo lo que los niños hicieron el primer fin de semana se proyecta en nuestro Cinemaker Black Box Studio en The Canopy: la pintura en movimiento de 16mm hecha a mano y las películas en Super 8 del barrio, sin editar, junto a obra de artistas de medios de Austin. Is it really free?
Yes. The workshops, the film, the paint, the cameras, the developing, the exhibition, the drinks, the snacks, and the photobooth. You pay nothing. Every supply is covered by our project funders and partners.
Who can register?
The Saturday 16mm workshop is for Govalle Elementary students and their families. The Sunday Super 8 workshop is for kids of any age with a parent or guardian. No film experience needed for either.
How do I pick a time?
Each workshop page has a Schedule dropdown. Choose one session per child. If you have more than one child, register each one separately so we can count the film. Siblings can share a session if there is space.
Can my child do both workshops?
Yes. They are different days and different formats. Register for each one on its own.
Does a parent have to stay?
Saturday: families are welcome at the table, but a parent does not have to stay in the room once a child is checked in. Sunday: a parent or guardian walks with the group, and the kids do all the shooting. Govalle Elementary teachers and MMAC staff are with every group the whole time.
What is the Youth Media Arts Panel?
On November 21 and 22, from 1:00 to 1:30 PM, the kids who made work on weekend one sit in front of the room at The Canopy and talk about what they made. Any registered child can join. Say yes on the registration form, or change your mind at check-in.
When do we see what the kids made?
At the exhibition, November 21 and 22, 12 to 4 PM in the Cinemaker Black Box Studio at The Canopy (Studio 110, Building 4, look for the banner). The 16mm strips are digitized into one moving painting, and the Super 8 film has to be developed and scanned, so weekend two is the premiere for both.
What about photos and video?
We document the workshops for MMAC's own use, including a short film after the tour. A parent or guardian signs a release at check-in, in English or Spanish. If you'd rather your child not be photographed, tell us at check-in and we'll make sure of it.

¿Quién puede inscribirse?
