ABOUT THE FILM
Brought to you by psychological suspense master Park Chan-Wook (Director of The Handmaiden, Thirst), Lady Vengeance is the final installment in the renowned “Vengeance Trilogy” following Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (2002) and Oldboy (2003). Don’t worry if you’re not familiar with the first two installments of this trilogy — while there are notable easter eggs throughout the films to tie the worlds together, each film is a stand-alone tale of individuals who find themselves on an inevitably twisted quest for retribution.
Park Chan-Wook initially released this film in color for the full duration of the film, however he had intended for the film to slowly fade to black and white as a symbol for the shift in morality and tone. Though he couldn’t finish the editing of the fade to B&W version by the time of the U.S. release, both cuts of the film are on the Korean DVD release so viewers can compare the effect of both versions.
While not for the faint of heart, Lady Vengeance tells a daring tale with a touch of surrealism and a surprising amount of humor.
Come see what Geum-ja’s quest holds for her, and remember: “All she wanted was a peaceful life.”
