Radical Learning, Analog Play, and DIY Filmmaking

16mm Direct Animation Workshop, February 2025

Summer’s here, and we’re not slowing down. Austin School of Film is cranking the volume on community-centered education and hands-on experimentation. Whether you’re itching to learn new digital tools, dive into the raw magic of analog film, or explore methods of traditional filmmaking, July is packed with chances to learn something new and maybe even start a cinematic revolution?!

community HIGHLIGHT: Free Analog Film WORKSHOP

Saturday, July 5, 2025 @ CINEMAKER

Chinwe Okorie

Come make something wild! Join award-winning filmmaker Chinwe Okorie, twice nominated for Best Austin Filmmaker by the Austin Chronicle, for Paint the Reel, a free drop-in analog film workshop celebrating family, joy, and community through hands-on creative chaos. Inspired by Chinwe’s film Cycles, we’ll hand-paint 16mm film strips to weave personal stories into a collective, experimental reel. You’ll leave with a digitized piece of the collaborative film—proof you were part of something electric.

No RSVP needed. No gatekeeping. Just show up, grab a brush, and get weird. All ages welcome. Family friendly.

This event is part of OPEN CANOPY, a campus-wide arts activation in East Austin. Join us and explore dozens of vibrant, art-focused spaces welcoming the public to connect with our local creative community!

Why We Do This

At Austin School of Film, we believe film is for everyone. We support community-centered skill-building that supports you to tell your story your way. We help protect analog formats from extinction. We create space for independent voices. And we stand firm in our mission to provide education that’s raw, real, and radically inclusive.

So remember, you don’t just have to watch films—you can make your own right here!
