This summer, Austin School of Film invites you to immerse yourself in three bold, project-based courses—each guided by a working local filmmaker and designed to take your vision from concept to completion. Whether you're ready to write your first screenplay, learn how to craft a music video, or produce a narrative short, these immersive, project-based experiences blend artistry, collaboration, and real-world tools to move your work—and your voice—forward.

Intro to Music Video Production

COURSE STARTS JUNE 16 (MONDAYS)

Music videos are a visual extension of a band’s identity and sound—adding cinematic poetry to their lyrics or simply creating space to play, experiment, and entertain.

In this specialized, production-focused course, filmmaker and theatre artist Ashten Falter leads students through the entire music video process: from treatment and storyboards to shooting live band footage and editing a final cut for a local band. 

You’ll gain firsthand experience in the production of stylized visuals, get a taste of what it’s like to collaborate with a local band and develop an actual music video from start to finish. Working in groups (aka crews), students will complete their own music video by course end with lots of help and feedback throughout the process.

Intro to Screenwriting

COURSE STARTS JUNE 17 (TUESDAYS)

If you’ve got a story in your head—or even just a great character you can’t stop thinking about—this course is could be your writing launchpad!

Led by artist and filmmaker Matthew Hemenway, this class breaks down the screenwriting process step-by-step, from building compelling characters to crafting a tightly structured three-act plot.

Students will finish a short screenplay and have the opportunity to submit their work for a live table read with local actors—a unique moment to hear your work come to life. This class is a powerful foundation for anyone interested in screenwriting, television, or film production.

Digital Filmmaking: Script to Screen

COURSE STARTS JULY 2 (WEDNESDAYS)

Our award-winning hands-on course is the perfect entry point for aspiring filmmakers looking to build technical skills while working on real-world indie film sets. Under the guidance of educator and filmmaker William F. Reed, students will crew up and produce 2–3 short narrative films using professional gear, developing their abilities in storytelling, collaboration, and production from concept through post.

From casting and lighting to editing and distribution, this immersive course covers it all—and ends in a celebratory public screening at our Bi-Annual Film & Friends Showcase. Plus, you’ll get access to the gear, studios, and support!
