Editing Theory & Aesthetics

$355.00
Only 8 available

Explore the artistry of editing in our Editing Theory & Aesthetics class, where we delve into how technical skills in post-production are applied to execute a creative vision.

Editing has the power to manipulate time and space, transforming the audience's experience. As editors, it's crucial to be clear about the purpose of each scene, project, and overall work.

Unlike other post-production classes that focus on technical editing training, our course emphasizes aesthetics, rhythm, and making creative choices.

Course Highlights:

  • Dive deep into the creative process of editing through analysis and screenings of film excerpts

  • Explore strategies and techniques used by editors to create connections between images

  • Apply concepts hands-on in your projects and receive feedback from an industry editor + filmmaker

Topics Covered:

  • Exploring the history of film and video editing

  • Controlling what the audience sees

  • Identifying the logline

  • Performing script and scene analysis

  • Creating an editing plan

  • Cutting from on-camera to off-camera action

  • The value of recutting

  • Shaping moments with music

  • Working in a specific genre

  • Mixing editing styles

This course will be held at the Austin School of Film in our iMac computer lab, with all materials, equipment, software, and computers provided for the duration of the class.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND
Ideal for individuals interested in deepening their understanding of the art of editing, and those pursuing completion of the Digital Video Certificate Program. Students must be at least 18 years old to enroll.

SUPPLIES & MATERIALS
Students are encouraged to bring work-in-progress footage on a drive to edit hands-on during class sessions.

PREREQUISITES
Strong computer literacy skills. This course is designed for students interested in delving deeper into editing and post-production. A basic understanding and proficiency in editing on platforms like Final Cut Pro, DaVinci Resolve, or Premiere Pro is required, as the focus is on the aesthetics and theory behind editing rather than the technical aspects of the software.

CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDIT
This course, like all offerings at Austin School of Film, is certified by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) to provide Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credits.
