This hands-on 6-week course will guide you through the entire process of making a short rotoscope animation, from concept to completion. Ideal for students and aspiring animators, this class is perfect for those who already have a video project they want to enhance with rotoscoping.
Under the guidance of a professional visual artist and animator, you'll receive creative input and technical training throughout the course. By the end, you'll have completed a 2-minute animated short using video files.

Introduction to Rotoscope Animation: Understanding the basics and history of rotoscoping.
Concept Development: Developing ideas and planning your animation project.
Video Preparation: Selecting and preparing video files for animation.
Rotoscoping Techniques: Learning the key techniques and tools used in rotoscoping.
Animating Frame-by-Frame: Creating smooth, dynamic animations from live-action footage.
Editing and Refinement: Fine-tuning your animation for the best visual impact.
Final Output: Preparing your animated short for presentation.
Throughout the course, you'll work on a project of your own, transforming video footage into a unique animated piece. This class offers a comprehensive introduction to rotoscope animation, providing both creative and technical skills needed to bring your artistic vision to life.
INSTRUCTOR: Jeanne Stern is a creative professional and multi-platform artist in digital media, animation, film, video and editing currently working and living in Austin, Texas. Her past work has screened at a variety of festivals and galleries around global including: PBS, The Smithsonian, South by Southwest and Heather Henson's traveling Film Festival. She holds an MFA in Film from the University of Texas and a BA in Studio Art from Connecticut College. She has been teaching both youth and adults within digital art creation and instruction for the past 5+ years including teaching at the University of Texas (Austin).
WHO SHOULD ATTEND: People who are interested in learning how to create a 2D digital animation film from start to finish and/or those interested in learning animation production.
PRE-REQUISITES: Intro to 2D Digital Animation or equivalent skill set. Students must be at least 16 years old to take this class.
SUPPLIES: any expenses occurred (ex. special supplies, set design) for your film are the student's responsibility. Students will have access to our iMac lab, creative software, equipment rental, studio spaces and co-working area during the duration of the course for their film needs.
CERTIFICATE: ASoF Digital Video Certificate elective class.
PAYMENT PLANS: Payment plans are available to anyone for any class or workshop. We suggest 25% of the tuition price as your “down payment”. The additional balance can then be split in up to 1-4 equal payments over the course of weeks or months. This course and all ASoF courses are certified with the Texas Education Agency (TEA) to provide Continue Professional Educational (CPE) credits.
