NYC-based Japanese Artist Chika Teaches You Projection Mapping
NEW MEDIA FOR ARTISTS & CREATORS
Projection mapping, similar to video mapping and spatial augmented reality, is a projection technique used to turn objects, often irregularly shaped, into a display surface for video projection. These objects may be complex industrial landscapes, such as buildings, small indoor objects or theatrical stages. By using specialized software, a two- or three-dimensional object is spatially mapped on the virtual program which mimics the real environment it is to be projected on.
In 2019, Austin School of Film partnered with Mappathon™ to bring the projection mapping workshop taught & created by accomplished educator and artist CHIKA to Texas for the first time ever.
We hosted 15 students from all over the USA (yes, really) ranging from professors, creatives, filmmakers, students, club owners, photographers, fashion designers and more. This was many participants first chance to take the workshop with multimedia artist Chika and learning the craft of project mapping. On the final day of the 2-day workshop, we hosted a public showcase of their installations & a talk with the visiting artist.
This Spring 2020, we’re doing it all over again and you’re invited!

Students will learn a practical foundation for creating installations using Modul8, MadMapper, and Vezer - no prior experience necessary.
Students will receive a free 30-day full access to Modul8, MadMapper, and Vezer to continue to develop their practice as part of their tuition.
This workshop is broken into three specific segments:
Education: The instructor will provide a step-by-step walkthrough each software. Participants will learn how to make animations from static images, mix video content, and projection map their creations onto specific 3-dimensional surfaces within the space.
Creative Execution: Participants will work together through an ideation phase to create a collaborative installation. They will experience the process of an art installation from concept to public presentation, further developing and exercising their newfound skills.
Presentation: Participants will have the opportunity to present their installation within the space. By seeing others interact with and respond to the piece, they will learn how projection mapping projects can be applied in innumerable ways, and benefit from constructive critique.
Topics covered but not limited to:
How to make a live visual animation using Modul8
Projection mapping exercise with madMapper
Projection Mapping Set-up (gear)
Projection Mapping with Music using Vezer
