Austin School of Film’s new Narrative Filmmaking Intensive is a 12-week course held annually, designed specifically for emerging filmmakers who aim to enhance their narrative filmmaking skills by producing a 5-10 minute short film. This program is ideal for individuals with some filmmaking experience who seek structured mentorship to refine their storytelling abilities.

Course Structure:

  • Weeks 1-3: Script Workshop – Participants will refine their own scripts through intensive development sessions and script doctoring.

  • Weeks 4-6: Pre-Production – Focuses on planning, casting, and scheduling, setting the groundwork for a smooth production phase.

  • Weeks 7-9: Production – Students will direct and manage their film’s production, applying practical skills in a real-world setting.

  • Weeks 10-12: Post-Production – Involves editing, sound design, and final touches, preparing the film for public screening.

Key Requirements: Students should have foundational skills in camera operation, lighting, sound, and editing. This course focuses on the art of narrative filmmaking rather than the technical fundamentals. Proficiency must be demonstrated as part of the application process.

Additional Opportunities: Participants will benefit from two in-class technical training labs with the instructor, aimed at refining their filmmaking techniques. The course will culminate in a student screening event produced by the Austin School of Film in December 2025.

  • Access to equipment and production resources at Austin School of Film, including Cinemaker Studios, is included in the tuition.
