SXSW 2017 Quick Review: Madre

Dir. Aaron BurnsA pregnant mother struggles to take care of her autistic child as her husband travels for work. At her wits end, a chance encounter brings a savior nanny into their lives. The child immediately improves, no more outbursts, he speaks in full sentences, and all seems well. Of course, this is all too good to be true and what follows is a tale of paranoia, dark happenings, and a simmering threat of tragedy. There's not a real feeling of danger here though and I think that's due to the daylight setting of the story and the uneven, sweet nature of the characters. What we end up with is a watchable genre flick with enough shocks to satisfy.
