Thirty years ago, Akira changed film and animation forever. From sci-fi to cyber punk, anime to fashion, its influence knows no bounds. Now, we will not only celebrate its influence on the art of today and the future, but blow up the cinema experience, using the powers of invention, friendship, and art to create an insanely unique, immersive, and local version of the theater-going practice we all hold so dearly.

The HFC team will transform the 8,000 sq ft warehouse space located at the school into a pop-up Akira-themed movie theater just for you. Join us at 7pm for a cocktail hour, photo booth, installations, small bites prepared on site by Austin Daily Press, limited edition tees available in collaboration with Raw Paw, vintage electronics to play with courtesy of Switched On, and beverages donated by Balcones Distillery, 4th Tap Brewing Co-op, Goodnight Loving Vodka, and more.

The Switched On Ensemble, a new supergroup of employees from Austin’s synthesizer headquarters featuring Joey Postiglione, Patrick Edwards and JU4N Cisneros, will perform a once-in-a-lifetime, concrete-shaking, brain-searing original score in accompaniment of the film at 8pm.

Tickets are available for purchase at HYPERREALFILM.CLUB/AKIRA. 100% of that money goes towards paying screening rights, venue fees, and artist stipends, helping to ensure that HFC can continue to produce unique, diverse, and community-driven programming.

ABOUT Switched On:

Switched On is a synthesizer dream space, storefront, repair spa, and online retailer of music electronics. Founded in 2010 in Austin, Texas, the Switched On storefront has become an international destination for musicians, producers, sound designers, and creatives alike. They are attracted to the store's ever-rotating selection of vintage audio devices and innovative new instruments.

Austin’s a city steeped in film lore, and the Hyperreal Film Club carries the torch of experimental and DIY video.

ABOUT Hyperreal film club:

Hyperreal film club is a home for radical voices and collaborative art experiences in Austin, TX. Voted Austin Chronicle's Critic's Pick Best More-Than-Just-Film Series 2017.

The collective was originally created to promote diverse, idiosyncratic, and daring films with a devoted local following of artists and art lovers. Since then, HFC has expanded in scope to produce crowd-sourced VHS zines and dance parties for critical causes, overtaken theaters, bars, and galleries for re-scores, fashion shows, experimental AV festivals, and phantasmagoric live art installations.
