Interactive Workshop: 16MM Tactile Filmmaking & The Role of Analog Arts in Imagemaking
with Faiza Kracheni

Before the timeline, there was the strip. This hands-on mini workshop explores 16mm film as a physical, tactile medium: touching celluloid, understanding frames as objects, and reconnecting with the slow, intentional craft of analog imagemaking.

Leading it is Faiza Kracheni, filmmaker, media artist, and founder of Motion Media Arts Center, who has spent two decades putting imagemaking tools in people's hands through Austin School of Film, one of Texas's longest-running community film schools. Rooted in analog practice and punk DIY culture, her whole career is an argument that you don't need an institution's permission to make images.

We'll dig into why analog processes still matter in a digital-first world, how working with your hands changes the way you see, and what 16mm can teach any imagemaker, no matter what tools you shoot on. No experience needed. Come curious, leave with film on your fingers.

You'll walk away knowing:

  • How to handle, read, and think in 16mm: the anatomy of the film strip, frames as physical objects, and how celluloid actually works

  • Why analog processes sharpen your eye, slow your process in the right ways, and carry over to digital imagemaking

  • Where tactile and cameraless techniques fit in contemporary media art, and how to start experimenting with analog tools on your own

Free workshops don't happen on their own. Our community keeps them that way. Consider adding a small donation below helps us keep the doors open to everyone in East Austin.

This event take place Cinemaker’s Black Box Studio on August 1, 2026 in East Austin at The Canopy Art Complex from 12-3pm.
