Our mission through the Cine Joven program is to give youth students the direct experience to represent & empower the Latinx community, culture, and identity through the art of film.

WHAT IS CINE JOVEN?

Since 2005, MMAC’S Cine Joven Program has offered a free digital filmmaking & media arts program for teens ages 14-17 years old. In its earliest incarnation, this was a bold experiment in class & culture-hopping, social-engineering outreach. Our reasoning was, essentially, if Austin's Latinx youth was underrepresented at Austin School of Film, then why not take ASoF —instructors, gear, & all— to the Latinx youth? What began as a way to engage primarily Latinx students in digital media has turned into programming that actually motivates audiences to adopt new behaviors. MMAC’s Cine Joven Program creates powerful media stories that change lives, both for the students who create them & the diverse audiences they reach.

2019 PROGRAM OUTLINE:

This fall, youth participants will learn the process of making a short film from script to screen while working with professional filmmakers and artist mentors, industry standard gear and software. Students are encouraged to incorporate stories they find important to them, with an emphasis on Latinx culture and to explore their growing potential as an emerging media creator/filmmaker. Stories build communities, filmmaking brings them to life.

Students will be immersed into the world of digital filmmaking and learn extensively on topics such as: screenwriting, story boarding, casting, camera movement, sound, lighting and will take on such crew roles such as: Gaffer (lighting), Boom Operator (sound), Editor, Cinematographer (camera), Producer, and Director. At the end of the program, students will have a festival-ready short film and participate in a special screening hosted at MMAC. Students will host real auditions, cast real actors, shoot on location in/around Austin and with professional filmmaking gear provided by MMAC.
