Tip For A Cause With Cocktails & Cinema

Tomorrow, we host our second event for COCKTAILS & CINEMA with Oakland-based artist, musician, and bartender Amanda “Mandy” Moore aka @inciting_incident!⁣ Mandy has been rooted in the DIY punk community for many years.

Currently she bartends at Starline Social Club (Oakland) —a safe, inclusive and creative event space that has a damn good cocktail program, queer events and shows (from Limp Wrist to Chanel Tres).

In her free time she creates jewelry for her brand Inciting Incident which has a loyal fanbase of 10k followers from all around the world. She has a knack for acid etching and hand piecing which helps her to create punk bootlegs and one of a kind sterling work. Although her event is sold out (and quick), Mandy will be raising funds for a LGBTQ+ migrant fund via @tqpubelo.

Earlier this week, Austin School of Film hosted our first COCKTAILS AND CINEMA with local artist & musician Sophia Massie.

We explored & learned with 25 other attendees (from all around the world) about the work of Avant Garde feminist pioneers Maya Deren & Shirley Clarke while sipping a refreshing cocktail led by Sophia virtually. Fairly new to Austin (originally from North Texas), Sophia is a bartender at Austin’s own Olamaie. She has been playing, booking, and touring for the last three years in the DIY punk scene & regularly contributes poetry & art to zine publications. Through her partnership with Austin School of Film, Massie was able to raise almost $200 for her cause (Black Mama Bailout) through her virtual tip jar just in time for Mother’s Day in just two hours.

Ana Armengod (@humanleather) is a Mexican illustrator, film artist, and musician currently living in Braddock, Pennsylvania, born in Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico. She is an art/media educator at the Braddock Youth Project which is a community based after school program that helps youth earn income and foster skills. She also works at Belvedere’s Ultra-Dive in PGH.

She’ll be joining us next weekend (there’s still a few spots left), where we’ll explore French New Wave filmmaker Agnès Varda and the one and only Jonas Mekas. Proceeds from her virtual tip jar will benefit the Braddock Youth Project’s programs. The cocktails remain a secret until 24 hours before the event when all attendees receive an exclusive email with Zoom link to join from any digital device supported by the software.

More than just a happy hour, Austin School of Film aims to connect, inspire, and celebrate cinema right at home with people from around the world. It’s free to sign up and although tipping is encouraged —there’s no pressure. During an uncertain time, we aim to inspire creativity and community through this series and other events at PLAY AT HOME.

COCKTAILS & CINEMA is curated each week by not only bartenders & artists from around the globe — but our very own Avant-Garde expert, educator, and Programs Director Faiza Kracheni. If you’ve met Faiza, you know she is passionate about film, access, and education. As a musician & media artist herself, she has met all three of the featured women on countless tours with her own bands and projects over the past 10+ years. A little punk, a lot of community, and damn good cocktails.

This event and a dozen more are part of our new online program PLAY AT HOME.

Produced by Austin School of Film, featuring live artist & filmmaker-led tutorials, lessons, talks, & more.
