2018 E.A.S.T. Artist Highlight | Jennifer Sneary
Tell me a little about you and your work as an artist. How would you describe your work?
I’m a born and raised Austin artist whose work is largely centered on plants, animals, and fantasy themes. I’m really interested in mythology and the symbolism of creatures in different cultures, and I try to incorporate those stories into my illustrations.
You have taken on some really interesting commercial clients in the past! Do you enjoy getting to play within these existing universes and how is tackling a project for a well known client different from creating original works for you?
Having the opportunity to create for some big names in the entertainment business has been so amazing! I’ve gotten to dive into some really awesome brands and stories that so many people connect with, and it’s always so much fun to see other people get excited about the things I’m working on too.
It’s really great to be able to switch it up with my original work and focus on projects that I’m passionate about and have some personal meaning for me. I get to create exactly my vision for a piece, and drawing is such a stress reliever after a busy day. I like to take my time with everything I do and that’s a luxury not involved in commercial work.
We're really excited about seeing some new work from you at the EAST exhibition, give us a little tease for what we should expect to see!
My recent works are detailed, nature-inspired pen and ink illustrations. With this series of work I’ve focused on highlighting animals often associated with magic, and paired them with plants or flowers with similar connotations.
