Come enjoy a weekend of dance storytelling at Austin Cinemaker Space on December 2–3, 2023, beginning at 7pm each night!
The event features Narratives of the Migrant Body, directed by interdisciplinary Brazilian-Amazonian dance artist Angelica Monteiro.
The presentation will include a brief opening dance piece by emerging student choreographer Lauren Jershin, entitled It’s Starting Again.
ABOUT MIGRANT BODY:
Narratives of the Migrant Body is the first installment of a three-part performance series entitled In Between, created by Angelica Monteiro.
The series reflects on the human experience of crossing borders— of territory, culture, and identity. Narratives of the Migrant Body explores the relationship between borders and bodies from a societal and individual level by challenging the myths underpinning the U.S. immigration system. Angelica and cast members Valentina Reyes, Natalia DePaula, and Makenna Wallace, embody the knowledge they gathered from interviewing Elissa Steglich, co-director of the Immigration Clinic at UT School of Law, as well as their own individual and family migration histories.
Blending movement styles of Waacking, traditional Amazonian dances, and improvisation with spoken word, the cast invites the audience to consider the fictions circulating in their consciousness about immigration in the United States. This production of Narratives of the Migrant Body is presented with support from Planet Texas 2050, the University of Texas at Austin Department of Theatre and Dance, and ARCOS Dance.
About Angelica Monteiro
Angelica is an interdisciplinary artist, movement storyteller, and educator from the Brazilian Amazon. Her artistic practice focuses on how geographic and anthropological movement patterns, such as immigration, colonization, and deforestation, influence the way we dance our stories. Her choreography fuses Street, Contemporary, and Brazilian/Amazonian dances to build her narratives. She has fourteen years of experience teaching and creating across Brazil and the United States, from Belém to São Paulo, Boston to the Bay Area, and most recently, Austin. She is a founding member and former director of Companhia Mirai de Dança, the first Street Dance company and school in the Brazilian state of Pará. Angelica received her M.F.A. in Dance and Social Justice from the University of Texas at Austin, where she now teaches in the Department of Theatre and Dance. Angelica is a grant recipient and former artist-fellow of Planet Texas 2050.
