Reclaiming the Value of Art

2025 Q1 Production Cohort, by Aaron Tamez

This February marked the exciting launch of our inaugural collaboration with the Studio Access Program at CINEMAKER, featuring a new addition to CINEMAKER’s facilities—the expansive 1,228 sq ft Black Box Studio.

Austin School of Film welcomed 40 enthusiastic filmmakers into the new studio from our Music Video Production and Script to Screen courses, providing them with crucial studio knowledge and practical experience using on-site equipment. These project-based courses are designed to be a foundational step for students as they begin the journey of crafting their very first short films.

What We Covered

The orientation extended beyond mere introductions to studio etiquette, equipment use, and scheduling. We dug into the very heart of why Austin School of Film exists. Our mission is multifaceted—not only do we provide educational opportunities and economic benefits, but we also delve into the more profound implications of our work.

More Than Just Jobs: Redefining Value in Art

Art, and film in particular, is one of the most powerful tools for social change. Studies show that stories told through film increase empathy by up to 25%, literally rewiring our brains to be more understanding of others. Documentaries have led to new policies, experimental cinema has pushed creative boundaries, and films have given historically marginalized communities a platform to reclaim their narratives.

Yet, when we talk about film solely in economic terms, we often miss the bigger picture. The real crisis isn’t a lack of profit margins—it’s a lack of access. Barriers to entry in filmmaking mean entire communities are left without representation. That’s why our mission at Austin School of Film is about more than job training. We’re here to break down these barriers, provide a space for untold stories, and give filmmakers the tools to create work that sparks something deeper than a financial return.

Because if we lead with this lens, all the other glitter and gold follows. If we don’t prioritize film as an art form—if we don’t fight to keep creativity at the forefront—then we risk losing the very thing that makes it powerful. So as these talented filmmakers start their journey to produce their first films, let's support and celebrate every moment of their creative process! Their stories have the power to alter perceptions, open hearts, and perhaps even change the world.
