Motion Media Arts Center Launches Free Underground Arts Series

INFO & TICKETS FOR 10/29 DEBUT

Motion Media Arts Center is excited to announce a new multidisciplinary arts series AFTER DARK launching in East Austin this Fall.

AFTER DARK explores the intersections of underground artists whose work is outside the conventional norms of the art world. Motion Media Arts Center seeks to create a space to showcase work by unconventional local artists with no artistic medium off the table. The event series will take place monthly and feature a mix of performances, interactive media, visual arts, and films while also showcasing film screenings of pivotal underground work in queer, BIPOC, and experimental cinema.

The importance of amplifying underrepresented and unconventional artistry is at the heart of the Motion Media Arts Center’s mission. For two decades, the organization has run Austin School of Film, a year-round community film center dedicated to providing publicly accessible education in film and creative media for all ages—supporting the next generation of storytellers.

In 2015, the organization launched Austin Cinemaker Space — a workspace + studio program that operates an all ages accessible 4,300 square foot venue, workspaces, video/photo studios, and equipment access for the arts. Both programs undoubtedly leave their mark on Austin’s creative community, shaping the culture of makers across the city’s landscape.

Motion Media Arts Center is also one of the few organizations who still teach analog filmmaking and experimental film techniques. Their analog educational programs aids artists of all ages and levels in accessing hard to find tools and equipment such as 16mm and Super 8 cameras, projectors, and a darkroom for development and experimentation.

“It was a natural progression, especially with the launch of our Community Darkroom coming this year. Launching a free arts series for the public by curating local artists and amplifying underground film is something we’re all so excited about as local artists ourselves.” said Co-Executive Director Faiza Kracheni on launching After Dark.

Hayes Morrison, an East Austin Native, is currently facilitating many of the events hosted by the arts center as the organization’s Community Manager. Five months ago, Hayes started the research and development for what would be BAD GIRLS CLUB, the first experience for AFTER DARK premiering on October 29, 2022.

“Austin has always had an active independent film community, and a large part of what we do at Austin School of Film and Austin Cinemaker Space is expose people of all different backgrounds to cinema they’ve never seen before in a way that is as approachable as possible. After Dark will feel like you’re going to a party but will be full of art that could change someone's world view, and that’s what makes it accessible.”

From experimental film artists to live performers and visual art —AFTER DARK will push the boundaries and redefine what is deemed “allowed” and “worthy” of exhibition. Will you join us?
