MIX/VHS | Week 041

A lot of exciting things are happening at Motion Media Arts Center. From our upcoming screening of A Scanner Darkly (featuring one of the lead animator of the film, Paul Beck), to preparing for our member and student screening Cinema Obscura, we still found time to curate this short MIX/VHS for y'all! Enjoy this week's recommendations!

WACTH THE TRAILER HERE!

Nothing like a meticulously directed gangster film with an incredible cast, as well as a super strong performance from Johnny Depp. There is a great actor in that husk of a man, just gotta call him out here and there.

You're The Worst - Season 3

WATCH IT HERE!

I've liked this show since season 1, but this last season of You're the Worst on FX has totally blown my mind.  They tackle the tough topics of PTSD, depression, loss, and deep-seeded relationship resentment in such entertaining and relatable ways.  While a show that breaches these dark moments of the human condition could be super dark or make too much light of these things to be taken seriously, there is something to be said for the mix of characters, their lack of empathy for one another, and the witty banter that keeps the show afloat comedically while it dips in and out.  There are two episodes you must see: Twenty-Two (Episode 3) - the PTSD episode and The Inherent, Unsullied Qualitative Value of Anything (Ep. 11) - which features many long flowing takes, many lasting commercial break to commercial break. **Also Ben Folds is in an episode this season.

The Simpsons - Chief Wiggum Twin Peaks Dream

simpsons-red-room

As obviously difficult it would be for me to recommend Twin Peaks: The Return to folks who have not seen the original run of the show, it's interesting to look back at how the cultural phenomena that was (and still is) Twin Peaks affected other shows coming out at the time. Especially juggernauts like The Simpsons. This sort of explains everything and nothing about the show in one scene with Chief Wiggum visiting 'The Red Room" (which is perfect, and ironic to later events in a show that you SHOULD see).
