MIX/VHS | Week 038

Cloudy and rainy, but still real toasty. The mugginess in Austin, Texas makes it feel like a rainforest constantly. All the same, we're enjoying a relief from 100+ degree weather, and we hope you enjoy this eclectic mix of recommendations from us at MIX/VHS!

Fill Your Heart With French Fries

WATCH IT HERE!

Who would've thought watching  an emotional breakdown taking place over the course of one week all inside a McDonald's could be so exciting?! Directed by Tamar Glezerman this equal parts funny and heartbreaking short was, horribly enough, based on a true story from China. Rather than dance around potential copyright infringements, Glezerman took the time to design the fake, but no less detestable "Frybaby's", and managed to cram in a critique of our fast food-dependent and social media-obsessed society while also writing one hell of a story. For fans of hashtags and trans fats.

Taylor Mali // What Teachers Make

Screen Shot 2017-08-03 at 10.08.07 AM

WATCH IT HERE!

Like most things I own, I stumbled upon a poetry book written by Taylor Mali and bought it solely because of the cover. I believe the term of phrase is "don't judge a book by it's cover", but in this case, that didn't apply to Mali's work. His wit and honesty grabbed me real quick in its arms, and I've been a fan ever since. Check out this spitfire takedown of all the folks who disrespect the vital role teachers play in our lives.

Hell's Club Mashup

WATCH IT HERE!

As mash-ups go, this is probably my all-time favorite - the amount of effort that's gone into this is both impressive and mind-boggling, and also a little scary. The premise of this edit is simple - everyone's favorite movie characters enjoying their day off in a night club - but the execution is absolutely delightful. Enjoy!

Your Pretty Face Is Going To Hell

YPFIGTH4

WATCH IT HERE!

America's underrated comedic gem, Henry Zebrowski, alongside a terrific ensemble, play a bunch of office demons in Hell. They are always at the will of Satan, and have to deal with his assigned tasks in a timely manner, lest they suffer the consequences. The show is hilariously performed, written, and ingeniously put together. Nothing is funnier than the uncensored monotony of normal day-to-day work of Hell. I have marathon-ed through the show in just a few hours, and I am immediately going back for more.

Take an inside look into the minds and experiences of six distinguished directors, all of whom possess their own unique perspectives on storytelling. The Hollywood Reporter breaks down these barriers by exemplifying the fundamental practices that lead each director to their success.

Minority Report - Umbrella Scene

MixVHS - Minority Report

WATCH IT HERE!

Even though Minority report was released over a decade and a half ago (waaaaay back in 2002), it still packs quite a punch. Be sure to check out this scene -- it's definitely a good time!
