SXSW 2018 Film Review | The Ranger

A handful of bratty punks go on the run after some wrong doing and settle for hiding out at a family cabin. Little do they know that a straight laced wacko ranger would interrupt their dumb fun with some violence. Problem here is that this fun premise is never really embraced. We don’t spend enough time with the characters to care if they do or don’t die, and the danger isn’t ramped up enough to make it truly scary.

One redeeming factor is Jermey Holm who plays the scene devouring Ranger of the title. He’s watchable, delivers great one-liners, and has a presence that is equal parts goofy and menacing. Ultimately it has enough punk rock attitude to make it an okay midnight movie, but it’s not bold enough to be a genre classic by any means.
