Austin School of Film's award-winning Youth Summer Film Camp is made up of intensive two-week courses that cover the fundamentals and creative aspects of filmmaking, animation, acting & directing, and editing. Students, ages 9 to 17, work with creative professionals within the subject matter being taught, to realize their creative visions and produce their own films by the end of each course. From developing the idea to planning the production process to screening the finished masterpiece, ASoF fully and quickly immerses the student into the wonderful world of filmmaking and creative media. Our programs are known for its award winning youth films, screenings on HBO, the Guggenheim Museum, AFI Film Festival, Chicago International Children's Film Festival, The Austin Film Festival, Nashville Film Festival and many more.

MORNING CAMPS: 10:00AM - 1:00PM, MONDAY - FRIDAY


Digital Filmmaking for Teens

Ages: 13-18

Aspiring filmmakers, start creating! Explore and experience every aspect of filmmaking in this two-week camp! Students will work in pairs collaborating and sharing ideas to create their very own short film with hands-on exercises in composition, camera movement, storyboarding, image, sound development and editing instruction with Final Cut Pro X.

All films are screened for the public at the Alamo Drafthouse during the Loud & Clear Youth Film Festival.

Tuition: $395 (30 hours)

Creative Animation: 2D & Stop-Motion for Teens
Ages: 9-12
 

Students will create their own animated worlds using a variety of techniques, including drawing and flash animation. Students work in pairs producing uniquely creative projects. No prior animation experience required.

All films are screened for the public at the Alamo Drafthouse during the Loud & Clear Youth Film Festival.

Tuition: $395 (30 hours)

Editing & After Effects for Teens
Ages: 13-18

This two week intro class to After Effects and Final Cut Pro training is designed for the beginning user. We will help you understand the basics of video editing, special effects, animation and compositing. With FCP and After Effects, editors, producers and animators can get instruction on the complete process of digital editing: logging footage, mastering onto a DV tape, creating sophisticated motion graphics and composite layers of QuickTime movies and graphic files.

All films are screened for the public at the Alamo Drafthouse during the Loud & Clear Youth Film Festival.

Tuition: $395 (30 hours)

Creative Code: Make Art With Code for Teens
Ages: 13-18

This camp is designed for students who are interested in learning to code in approachable creative way using programs such as Scratch, Processing and Java. Java is one of the most popular and in-demand programming languages in the tech world today. Students will create their own works of art completely with code and build skills that will undoubtedly set the foundation for a digital creative future.

All films are screened for the public at the Alamo Drafthouse during the Loud & Clear Youth Film Festival.

AFTERNOON CAMPS: 2:00PM - 5:00PM

3D Animation With Cinema 4D for Teens

Ages: 13-18

This camp is perfect for students who are interested in 3D Animation using a highly professional creative software Cinema4D and its many applications in the design, motion graphics, VFX and 3D animation space. C4D is a program used by visual arts professionals every day in digital media and this camp is best suited for students who have some animation and/or After Effects experience. Topics that will be covered in the course include 3D title design and animation, and the use of dynamics for simulating real world physics.

Prerequisites: Students who have taken or have previous experience with using Adobe After Effects and/or animation.

Editing & After Effects for Teens
Ages: 13-18

Super 8 + Abstract Filmmaking for Teens

Ages: 13-18

In week one, students will learn the process and development of creating a short Super 8 black and white silent film. From camera basics, shoot techniques to the chemical process, development and splicing your reel. In the second week, will explore the highly experimental and deeply satisfying world of creating motion pictures entirely without a camera. Students will be shown a variety of work made in this manner with a wide range of techniques including: painting directly on film, exposing film out-of-camera, working with colored leader, and working with found footage. In turn, students will create their own film using both Super 8 and Abstract techniques from start to finish. Through the course, students will have many fun filmmaking exercises including shooting and painting on film! No previous experience in film required.

All films are screened for the public at the Alamo Drafthouse during the Loud & Clear Youth Film Festival.

FAQ:

~ What are the size of our camps?  

Our Summer Camps are capped at 15 students per camp for Digital Filmmaking, DIY Music Video, and Animation & 8 students for software training Adobe After Effects. This is to ensure each student has optimal time with their instructor and peers.

 

~ Does Austin School of Film provide campers lunch?

Austin School of Film will provide snacks and beverages throughout the day. All day campers are required to bring a sack lunch. The last day of camp will be served as a screening party with pizza and beverages provided by ASoF! Invite your friends and family to enjoy some pizza & view your films with the other campers. We prefer students do not bring glass. Students are welcome to bring their own favorite snacks and beverages.

 

~ Are students permitted at any time to leave school campus?

No student is allowed to leave school campus during the duration of camp unless accompanied by their guardian/parent.

 

~ When is drop off and pick up?

Earliest drop off time is 9:30AM for morning camp & 12:30PM for afternoon camp. If student is being picked up early for any reason, please notify ASoF by call or email prior to the pick-up.

 

~ Is the content of the films created by campers censored?

Austin School of Film does not believe in censoring our students. However, there are rules! 1. No fake or real weapons or blood of any kind. 2. No cursing or foul language. 3. No mindless violence or inappropriate content. Our instructors are mindful of the creative flow of our students and will assure their film ideas are thought out and constructed in a positive environment.

 

~Does ASoF provide scholarships?
