Austin School of Film @ Motion Media Arts Center's award-winning Youth Summer Camp is made up of intensive two-week courses that cover the fundamentals and creative aspects of filmmaking, animation, acting & directing, and editing. Students, ages 9 to 18, work with experienced filmmakers and animators to realize their creative visions and produce their own films by the end of each course.

Screenwriting for Youth

This eight-week course teaches youth the basics of screenwriting: brainstorming, outlining, professional formatting, three act structure, revisions, workshopping, and table reads. Local filmmakers, writers, and actors will also appear as guests in our class. Every student leaves with at least one complete ready-to-shoot screenplay.

Digital Filmmaking for Teens

This hands on 8-week course will take students through the process of making a short film from script to screen. Students will be immersed into the world of digital filmmaking and learn extensively on topics such as: screenwriting, story board, casting, camera movement, sound, lighting and will take on such crew roles such as: Gaffer (lighting), Boom Operator (sound), Editor, Camera, Producer, and Director.

SXSW M.A.F.I.A Competition & Festival
SXSW YOUTH M.A.F.I.A 2017

In partnership with South by Southwest (SXSW) Film, the Austin School of Film (ASoF) is offering a free event open to high school students, ages 1419. Participants are challenged to work in teams of four to write, shoot, and edit a five-minute short film according to set guidelines within 24 hours, hence the name of SXSW Youth Make a Film in a (MAFIA) Day Film Festival.

SXSW Community Animation Workshop
SXSW Community Workshop

This workshop is free and open to ages 11-18. Participants will learn about 3D image making. They will use their imagination to create miniature worlds that will be presented as a 3D film on the big screen. No experience necessary. Finished work will be screened as a part of SXSW 2015 Film Festival.

Youth: Abstract Filmmaking

This 3-week workshop will explore the highly experimental and deeply satisfying world of creating motion pictures entirely without a camera. Students will be shown a variety of work made in this manner with a wide range of techniques including: painting directly on film, exposing film out-of-camera, working with colored leader, and working with found footage. In turn, students will create their own no camera movie utilizing these techniques and the editing method of their choice. All supplies included for the duration of this workshop.
