DSLR Filmmaking for Beginners

Filmmakers are quickly adopting shooting their video with DSLR cameras for the small form factor, relatively low cost, and professional cinematic look of shooting with an array of changeable lenses.

There are many tricks involved in achieving professional quality video when using a DSLR camera and this class is designed to teach students hands-on the knowledge and tools necessary to shoot quality and achieve your visual aesthetic when using a DSLR camera to shoot video. We will discuss such things as: camera functions, lenses, rigs, lighting, backpack filmmaking and feature firsthand advice from local filmmakers currently working in the film industry and their experiences with DSLRs.

Get the DOs and the DON’TS, sound film advice and a skill set to walk away and begin to work and create.

This class is open to all levels.

ASOF Certificate: Digital Video Certificate Elective

Prerequisites: Own or use Canon 7D, 5D MkII, t2i, or HD video equipped DSLR.

About the Instructors

Cordelaine (Corey) Kline is an Austin based filmmaker and digital arts teacher. Kline is currently making a romantic comedy web series called Jim the Jerk (www.jimbrazina.com). Kline also operates a digital arts summer camp where he instructs 9-18 year olds about iPhoto, Garageband, iMovie, Scratch, and MS Office. Kline has worked as an Assistant Camera/2nd AC on 3 feature films. Kline graduated from the University of Iowa Cinema Program where he produced and DP'd a feature film called Diary of a Superhero which won the Award of Excellence from Iowa Motion Picture Association. www.cordelaine.com 


Luke Adams is a local filmmaker and Austin native. Luke graduated from the University of Texas with a degree in Radio, Television, and Film, where he focused on cinematography and live action 3D production. Luke currently freelances in Austin filming music videos and working on indie film sets as a DP and Gaffer.
